WHAT IS LITTLE ATHLETICS?
Little Athletics is a uniquely Australian modified athletics program for children from 5 to 17 years, although some Member Associations may offer age groups outside this range.
As the name suggests, it is based upon the sport of athletics (track and field). There is a wide range of events from running, jumping, throwing and walking and events are modified to suit the age, developmental stage and ability of the children.
Little Athletics promotes that it is important to “Be your Best” ®. The emphasis is on fun, participation, performance, technique and getting involved with your family in physical and healthy activity. The motto of Little Athletics is ‘Family, Fun and Fitness”.
Across Australia, more than 100,000 girls and boys enjoy the activities of Little Athletics. Little Athletics is the “Foundation for all Sports”. All sports use the skills developed at Little Athletics.
HOW LONG HAS HWLAC BEEN AROUND?
The High Wycombe Little Athletics Club was formed in 1970 and the athletes are referred to as “The High Wycombe Hornets”.
This club is run by volunteers and as we are a family club, we ask all Parents to have an active role in all training sessions and to help out where you can. On competition days you will be required to fulfil a certain number of roster positions (on avg once every 2-3 weeks) over the course of the season to help with the running of certain event sites at Belmont Little Athletics Centre.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Little Athletics is for young people aged 5-16 years. There is no standards or requirements athletes must meet to be able to participate in Little Athletics, meaning children of ALL abilities are more than welcome to join in.
Some centres may also choose to offer a Tiny Tots program for Under 5’s. The Tiny Tots program is designed to develop the children’s fundamental movements of running, jumping and throwing through fun and enjoyable activities.
WHAT TIME OF YEAR DOES LITTLE ATHLETICS TAKE PLACE?
Little Athletics is primarily a summer sport, running from October through to late March. Centres will open registrations in early September.
Belmont Athletics Centre also conduct cross-country and road walking during the winter months taking place during April to the end of July. Membership for the winter season is included when you register with us in September.
WHERE WILL MY CHILD BE PARTICIPATING AND HOW OFTEN?
Your Athlete will attend training Monday & Thursday’s at High Wycombe Primary School and will compete on Saturday at Belmont Athletics Centre.
Competition days are where your athlete will participate in a variety of events across an A,B,C Program.
State Events hosted by Athletics West are hosted at the Athletics Stadium in Floreat.
WHAT EVENTS ARE OFFERED?
Little Athletes will generally do a range of athletic (track and field) events in any given weekly program. The number and combination of events will differ from week to week, and usually work on a rotational basis throughout the season across an A,B & C program.
Some of the events include Sprints, Hurdles, Middle Distance, Race Walking, Relays, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, Long Jump, Triple Jump, and High Jump. Note that some events have age restrictions on them.
Safety and fun are of the utmost importance at Little Athletics; hence equipment is modified to suit the age and developmental stage of the athletes. For example, it may be lighter (e.g. discus), made from modified materials (e.g. foam javelins, or elastic high jump bar), or of a smaller height (e.g. hurdles), to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our Little Athletes.
HOW MUCH DOES LITTLE ATHLETICS COST?
Our fees start from $226.00 per athlete for Little Athlete Members, $236.20 for Junior Members & $282.10 for dual members. This fee covers both the summer & winter season calendar and events.
CAN I USE A KIDS SPORTS VOUCHER?
Yes! Kids Sport enables eligible Western Australian children aged 5 to 18 years to participate in community sport by offering them financial assistance of up to $300 per calendar year towards club fees.
Applications can be made either online or by downloading the information and application form. You will need to apply and have received your voucher before you can register. There will be an option for you to select voucher and enter your Kids Sport code during the online registration process.

HOW DO I REGISTER MY CHILD?
If your child would like to take part in Little Athletics, you need to register via Rev Sport. Visit our registration page for details. It is suggested that prior to registering online to contact us to ensure that you have all the specific information available to you. Where possible we strongly recommend you come and do a trial before joining to ensure athletics is right for you and your family. Registrations for the 2025/26 summer season will open on the 1st September 2025.
CAN MY CHILD TRY LITTLE ATHLETICS BEFORE JOINING?
Yes and it’s strongly recommended that you do. If you are undecided about registering, we offer two training session and one competition day on a ‘Come and Try’ basis. Visit our ‘Come and Try’ trial page for details.
WHAT DAYS ARE TRAINING ON?
Training Days are: Mondays – 5:00pm – 6:00pm & Thursday – 5:00pm – 6:30pm at High Wycombe Primary School Oval. Look for the two sea containers on the oval.
DO WE HAVE TO ATTEND BOTH TRAINING SESSIONS?
No. Whist we recommend your athlete try attend as many training sessions as they can, training is not compulsory. If you can only make one or no training sessions for the week that is totally fine.
WE CAN’T ATTEND SATURDAY COMPETITIONS CAN WE JUST ATTEND TRAINING SESSIONS?
Unfortunately No. We do not have training only memberships. Every athlete joining High Wycombe Little Athletics is expected to compete on Saturday’s at Belmont Athletics Centre. Whilst you don’t have to compete every week, our expectation is you complete at least 50% of the competition dates. If you want to qualify for Belmont Centre Champs at the end of the season, to qualify for an event each athlete must have completed that event 3 times during the season.
DO CHILDREN NEED TO WEAR A UNIFORM?
Yes. All registered athletes must wear our approved club uniform when competing in Little Athletics competitions at Belmont. You will need to purchase a race top from our online store. For training athletes can wear whatever they like. Closed shoes are compulsary.
WHAT IS EXPECTED OF PARENTS?
Because Little Athletics is a totally voluntary sport, we cannot operate without the assistance of parents and other adult volunteers each week in fulfilling the many and varied duties required. These include officiating at an event; managing an age group; recording results; working in the canteen; just to name a few. Most Centres have parent duty rosters in order to share the load. Additional assistance is always required on the Centre committees and all parents are required to become involved.
